Ask Jonette: How Do I Involve Everyone?

On September 25, 2010

Today’s question is “How do you give everyone in the family something to do so they don’t feel left out?”

I love this question.  Who am I kidding, I love all questions about weddings!  While I obviously don’t know every family member or friend of all brides of the world, I can definitely give you an answer that applies to more people than not.

The truth is, with the exception of your mother, most of the time family members and friends do not want to be assigned a task in preparation of your wedding!  But Jon’ette, they told me that they are ready to help if I need them. Chances are, they were telling you what they thought you wanted to hear.  They were simply being kind because saying “I just want to be a guest and enjoy myself, please don’t put me to work” would have seemed mean.  Nobody wants to be mean to a bride-to-be.

Bridesmaids want to be involved in the fun stuff – picking out and trying on your dress and theirs, bridal showers and bachelorette parties.  Anything more than that often seems like work to them!

If planning your wedding requires more time and help than you and your mother have to give, hire a wedding planner.  Some brides can afford a wedding planner, some think they cannot.  If you think that your budget is too tight for a wedding planner, think again.  There are experienced, talented wedding planners in every area who will not cost you an arm, a leg and your first born!  Take the time to find them.  In the end, they’ll actually save you money and allow you to enjoy the wedding planning process.
